Every summer I make the same mistake: get excited that its finally hot and sunny out, rush down to the beach, sit in the sun for hours on end and then come home looking like a lobster, and this summer was no exception.
Last week I went down the shore and I promised myself I wouldn’t burn. So I put 50 SPF sun tan lotion on my body and then Nuetrogena sun tan lotion on my face. Obviously I thought I was good to go, but apparently I wasn’t going to win my battle with the sun this time. When I got home my lips were bright red! Of course, every part that I drenched in suntan lotion was fine, but unfortunately I had forgotten to put anything on my lips.
I spent the rest of the weekend in misery as I woke up with a swollen mouth every morning because I was so burnt and it got to the point that Aloe Vera wasn’t helping much anymore. That Monday, being fed up with a swollen face, I marched down to the local drug store and asked what I could do to help with the pain and redness. I was given Aquaphor Healing Ointment and as soon as I put it on I immediately felt better. Two days latter my lips were back to their normal size and felt 100 times better.
So today I want to help all of you so that you don’t go down the same road I did. First, make sure to always apply sun tan lotion, even if you want to tan. I put sun tan lotion all over my body before I left my house and then put on tanning oil when I got to the beach and I still got a nice bronze while protecting my skin. Next, if you don’t want to put regular sun tan lotion on your face, put lotion made specifically for your face so it’s lighter and won’t clog your pores. It could be suntan lotion or even a moisturizer since most of them have some sun protection now. Make sure to blend the lotion into your hairline too so you don’t burn the edges of your face, because I made that mistake also.
Most importantly, please, please, PLEASE, remember to get chap stick with SPF in it to protect your mouth. Don’t forget like I did and damage your lips; you’ll end up walking around with red, swollen lips and let me tell you from experience, it’s not cute.
If you know you’re going to be out in the sun for a while, bring an umbrella for the beach or wear a cute floppy hat or a baseball hat, whatever you feel comfortable in!
Although you may want that great tan from one day on the beach, a gradual tan is better for your skin. Would you rather a great tan for a couple days, or a gradual tan and healthier skin in the long run?
