Bathing suit season is upon us which means two things: going to the gym and getting a tan. Tanning has been in the news a lot lately with “tanning mom” and all of the controversy that surrounds tanning beds. Seventeen magazine has recently partnered with DoSomething.org to come up with a pledge for teens and young women to stop using tanning beds. With people like “tanning mom” and the new no tanning pledge, young girls may start to develop awareness to the dangers of tanning and stop using tanning beds.

Since summer is just around the corner, here are three tips to stay safe in the sun.

1. Wear sunscreen!
This one may seem obvious but a lot of people don’t wear it or they forget. Pick a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays and that is a high enough SPF for your skin type. Tanning oil does not count as sunscreen

2. Protect your scalp!
Most people don’t realize that they can get sunburn on their head. Wearing a cute hat to the beach can help keep your scalp protected from an itchy sunburn

3. Wear sunglasses that have UV protection in them to keep your eyes safe
