Rihanna’s Second River Island Collection

Rihanna is everybody’s favorite bad girl. Women wish they could pull off her fashion-forward leather looks and every-changing hair colors and styles. So last February when she designed a line for U.K. chain River Island, the fashion world was on the edge of it’s seat. Unfortunately, instead of great 90’s inspired outfits, the singer’s line was reviewed as a “horror show” and described as “porny”.

But never one to give up the singer is once again coming out with a line for the brand with her design partner Adam Selman. We recently got a preview for the second collection that is full of summer looks including bathing suits and floral crop tops with matching shorts. She provides us with wardrobe staples like a jean jacket and a lot of simple tank tops and knotted t-shirts. You can certainly still see Rihanna’s infamous style throughout the collection with mesh skirts and leather bejeweled trucker hats. Not sure if you will be rocking River Island this summer? Check out the rest of the collection courtesy of Vogue!

Below are comfortable clothes that Rihanna describes as outfits for your “fat days”. Will the fashion world be more accepting of our beloved RiRi the second time around? We will have to wait and see but from the taste we got already we are on board for our second trip to River Island. Will you be joining us?

Fashion in The Great Gatsby

On Friday, May 10th, 2013 the much-anticipated The Great Gatsby, was released. Although the movie itself received mixed reviews and had to compete in box office sales with movies such as Iron Man 2, one thing was indisputable: the glamour and sparkle of the 1920’s fashion was incredible. With designers such as Prada and Tiffany & Co it was hard to go wrong.

With mile-long pearl necklaces, sky-high feather headdresses, and diamonds dripping on everything from the women to the chandeliers, it wasn’t historically accurate but it certainly appealed to its 21st century audience. Even the men were decked out in colorful, fitted suits custom designed by Brooks Brothers. A company that had a long-running relationship with the author of The Great Gatsby himself, F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Then there was the jewelry! Gatsby with his pinky ring that we see before we are even introduced to Leonardo DiCaprio’s blue eyes and smiling face. Daisy’s engagement ring that rivaled the diamond rings worn on the fingers of the infamous Kardashians. The flapper style accented with diamonds and sequins danced across our screens and throughout the movie enticing the audience more than the storyline itself.

Are you feeling a little retro? Want to spruce up your own wardrobe with some 1920’s flare? Getting the Gatsby look is easier than you may think if you’re willing to spend some cash. Tiffany & Co, Brooks Brothers, and Prada all have their own Great Gatsby inspired lines with some of the actual looks that appear in the movie!

Making A Statement

Okay, we get that sometimes designers come out with statement pieces to get people talking, but Chanel’s Hula Hoop Bag is a little extreme. The bag was found on yesterday’s runway during Paris Fashion Week. It present Chanel’s trademark C interlocking as well the brand’s classic stitched leather, elegantly placed between two black hula hoops. Although the hula hoops give the bag a beachy theme, there seems to be no practicality that could come from using this bag at your local pool or beach.

Keeping Up with Fashion

Kendall and Kylie Jenner, the two younger sisters of Kourtney, Kimberly, and Khloe Kardashian. have announced that they are working on a juniors clothing line. The 15 and 16 year old designers are including t-shirts, pants, shorts, and accessories in their new line. We’re so eager to see what these girls come up with as they plan to launch their new line this spring! We can only infer from this that the Kardashian-Jenner klan is here to stay. Even when some of them seem to be staying out of the limelight, the youngest of the bunch are paving their paths into the industry just like their sisters.

A Leg Up

Out of all the trends to come back in style, many of us can agree that leggings are our absolute favorite!

The girls at MTL Communications love leggings. While leggings look great with a long tunic, a big comfy sweater, or even a long tank or tee some girls think its okay to wear these amazing staple pieces as pants. What many girls don’t seem to understand is that the material used for leggings is very sheer and as soon as you set foot in direct sunlight or decide to bend over, anyone behind you gets a glimpse of your undergarments along with a clear visual of your behind. While men might find this look appealing, the rest of the female population wants to run and find a sweater to wrap around your waist.

So ladies, no matter how good it looks in your bedroom mirror, if the top does not cover your derriere then find one that does before you step out in public.

Trick or Treat

Since October has officially begun, this is crunch time for us MTL girls to find cool, trendy Halloween costumes. Lucky for us, CNBC provided us with a guide of the trendiest costumes of the season. Here are some of our favorites:

1.Courageous Lion: Fur is very popular this Halloween. Whether it be accessorizing an animal, a monster, or some sort of anime character, these fuzzy costumes have been selling out everywhere!
2. Passionate Princess: Sexy costumes have been growing increasingly more popular each and every year. Costume Confidential offers high quality fabrics and more attention to detail that ensures you will be the center of attention at any party you attend!
3. Everyday heroes: The CEO of Spirit Halloween expects to see a huge rise in military, sailor, police, and firefighter costumes this fall! These costumes are very easy to find and allow us to purchase such a wide variety of accessories to pair with them! What girl wouldn’t want that?

More trendy costumes include pirates, funny foods, super heroes, care bears, and the infamous Honey Boo Boo. Hopefully we’ve helped you narrow down some Halloween costume choices you may have had! Happy shopping :)

Trends we don’t love: Mustaches

While we’re constantly talking about the things we love at MTL, we sometimes can’t help but talk about the things we absolutely hate! First on our list: the fake mustache trend. Whose idea was it to plaster mustaches on t-shirts, socks, hats, and every other wearable item out there? There’s nothing cute or trendy about a Mario-&-Luigi-esque mustache all over your body. And don’t even get us started on those finger tattoos. Purposely and permanently drawing a mustache on your finger is one of those fads we will never understand.

Mustaches

Claire Lawton posted Five Sure Signs the Mustache Trend Needs to Die (Please) on the Pheonix New Times blog and we honestly couldn’t have said it better ourselves. She really hits the nail on the head with this one. Mustaches have truly crashed the party and have over-stayed their welcome.
